Perhaps it’s less about listening with an open mind, and more about listening with an inquisitive conscience.

In a time when the fabric of political discourse seems to be fraying at the edges, there remains an urgency—a need—to reclaim the core principles that have held this nation together.  With this podcast I will walk with you to to try and understand how we got here, and maybe how we can get back.

Welcome to The Knight Watch. I’m Douglas Knight.

So, what’s a “beguine”?  “Beguine” refers to a slow, swaying dance form and musical style from the Carribean.  (It’s also the name of a 13th century religious comunity of women in Europe.. but we will ignore that here). In the context of the song “Begin the Beguine,” it refers to the dance, which was popularized by Cole Porter and has roots in both French ballroom and Latin folk dances.  The idea… our interaction will be a kind of a metaphoric dance using words as our flow to a better undertanding, under a softer beat.

This podcast is not a call to arms. Not an impassioned cry for avenging justice. Rather, it is a personal affirmation—a quiet but resolute faith in the framework that has endured for more than two centuries. A framework that has guided us through change, through turmoil, through growth.

Walk with me now.. or go get a cup of coffee and get comfortable.  Think of this as a one-on-one… on discussing the future of America… as Knights of the Constitution.

This is my first episode so I suppose we should use it to get to know each other a little bit.

The Constitution offers a process—a way forwardnot an emotional rallying cry. It provides us a means to work through differences, to find common ground, to reconcile competing values that define our nation. This is not about idealizing the Constitution, but rather understanding its role—its power—in moderating our impulses, refining our collective actions, and shaping our shared future.

The Constitution does not always provide the answers we seek. It does not guarantee perfect outcomes. Democracy itself is not designed to do that.  And yet, it is in the act of working through its framework that we find our way.  These discussions are not about emotional outbursts. They are not about partisan warfare. They are, instead, an encouragement—an invitation—to engage in dialogue rooted in constitutional governance.

We can all be, in a way, knightsdefenders not of any one ideology, but of the integrity of the process itself. Even when the results are disappointing. Even when they are contentious.

For those who choose to listen, this is a call to moderation. A rejection of extremism as emotionalism. A hopeful look toward a future we shape together.  It’s about the singular idea that all things politically contentious will have CONTEXT.  Challenge the who, what, why, where, and how of it all by using some level of critical thought.  Forget generalities.  Forget the populist trends and memes that have little or no substance in truth without exploring deeper.  Forget accepting what your favorite talking head tells you as fact.

So.. who the hell am I anyway, you ask? I won’t waste your time going into that here, but when you get some time  check out the About Me on my blog site.  Suffice for now that, like you, I’ve been around, had a life, and I’d like to pass on some of that experience in this podcast to try and present alternative thought by using… thought.  My thoughts are no more, no less… as important.. than anyone else’s.  This is why, at time goes on, I want to include feedback from my listeners that I can also share.

This is my not-so-humble attempt to live my faith in the Constitution. To create a space where we can think, reflect, and navigate this complex world—one step at a time.  Do I think my podcasting will garner that reaction to all, if any?  Of course not.  But let me make this much clear up front… I do not believe in wild conspiracy theories.. the existence of some all powerful deep state… or some blow-it-all-up  fix of our national debt… or some random and reckless slicing and dicing of our Constitutional institutions.  But I do believe many Americans do and that makes it important to acknowledge… and understand.

My idea of “following” the Constitution is not about extending, or projecting my own emotional interpretation of it.  As I suggested already, it’s all about making sure we follow the process to settle our differences and align the way we.. as in we, the people, elect to govern ourselves.  This is not about  convincing an uncaring world what I think is right or wrong, good or bad.  I am not here to seek agreement. I am not here to persuade.  I prefer to think I am in here doing this to get listeners to consider context and critical thinking in order to find an understanding that opposing thought is not an “enemy”.

So, let’s step forward together.

The next episode, the first one tackling a real subject, should give you an idea of where I am coming from.

I’m Douglas Knight.  See you next time.
